The highly anticipated GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition mod has been taken down by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, in yet another clash with the modding community.
A Mod That Revived Vice City in GTA 4’s Engine
The Russian modding group Revolution Team had been working on the ambitious project to bring Vice City’s world, cutscenes, and missions into the 2008 GTA 4 engine. The mod, which was recently released alongside a dedicated trailer, quickly gained traction, accumulating over 100,000 views and 1,500 comments in under a day.
However, Take-Two requested the removal of the promotional video from YouTube, following a pattern of similar takedowns in the past. Revolution Team responded by stating that they had anticipated this move but were determined to release the mod nonetheless.
Take-Two’s Actions and the Fallout
Take-Two's intervention went beyond just the mod trailer. According to Revolution Team, their YouTube channel was deleted without warning or prior communication:
"A significant amount of effort and time was invested in this channel, including hundreds of hours of livestreams dedicated to the development of the mod. Additionally, we have lost a vital connection to our international audience, which was an essential part of our community."
The team expressed their frustration, stating that while the takedown was expected, it was still a harsh and demoralizing experience. They initially planned to require a legally owned copy of GTA 4 to play the mod but, in light of the situation, they chose to release it as a standalone, ready-to-install package to reach a broader audience.
Modding Community vs. Take-Two
This is far from the first time Take-Two has taken action against modding projects. The company has previously issued takedown requests for projects like:
- AI-enhanced GTA 5 story mode mods
- A VR mod for Red Dead Redemption 2
- Liberty City Preservation Project
- A GTA Vice City remake inside GTA 5
While Rockstar itself has sometimes recruited modders for official projects, Take-Two has a history of aggressively shutting down fan-made content—often leading to tensions within the gaming community.
What’s Next for GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition?
Despite Take-Two’s crackdown, the mod remains available for download, though its longevity is uncertain. Revolution Team has stated they will not openly encourage reuploads but won’t oppose them either:
"We don’t know how long the mod will remain publicly available, nor whether further removal requests will follow. If you want to re-upload it, do as you see fit."
The ongoing battle between modders and publishers continues, raising questions about the future of fan-made content in the gaming world. While some argue that Take-Two’s approach stifles creativity, others see it as a necessary move to protect intellectual property. Either way, the GTA modding community remains resilient, finding ways to keep their passion projects alive.
