Thousands of BT customers across the UK are experiencing internet and email disruptions following a major system failure this morning. Reports indicate that around 5,000 users have been affected, struggling to access their connections and emails, according to Downdetector.

BT has acknowledged the issue, with a spokesperson stating: "We’re aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app. We’re investigating the cause of this and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Alternatively, customers can switch off WiFi and use mobile data to access their email. No other BT service is impacted."
The problems reportedly began around 5 AM, and as the morning progressed, the number of affected users continued to grow. Frustrated customers took to social media to express their concerns, demanding transparency and updates from the telecom giant.
On X , Dave Bradshaw questioned BT’s lack of communication, posting: "Please can you explain why, when your email service is down, there isn’t a pinned message here to tell us what the problem is and when we might expect it to be fixed?" Meanwhile, Brian Waters added: "Your BT internet mail server is down! Cannot get mail."
Users also voiced their frustration on Downdetector. Finlay McKay commented: "Internet was down for hours yesterday, and I woke up to find it’s down again. Not acceptable."
The outage comes at a particularly inconvenient time, as BT recently announced price increases for its mobile and broadband services. Starting in March, customers with contracts taken out from April 10, 2024, could see their bills rise by up to £3 per month. Additionally, Plusnet—also owned by BT—confirmed a £3 monthly increase for broadband customers with contracts signed after July 11, 2024.
With growing discontent among users, BT now faces mounting pressure to resolve the issue swiftly and improve its customer communication.
