Elden Ring Nightreign Hands-On: A Thrilling Co-op Adventure Awaits

The highly anticipated Elden Ring Nightreign is set to launch on May 30 for PS5 and PS4, bringing an all-new co-op multiplayer experience to the legendary Elden Ring universe. Unlike the original game, which focused on solo exploration, Nightreign emphasizes fast-paced survival, strategic teamwork, and intense PvE combat as players battle against the creeping night and its formidable dangers.

A Dark, Challenging Journey Begins

Recently, we had the opportunity to participate in the upcoming network test ahead of its public release on February 14. Our hands-on experience revealed a fresh yet familiar adventure that blends classic RPG elements with new mechanics that demand quick reflexes and coordinated teamwork.

In contrast to Elden Ring's slower-paced exploration, Nightreign keeps players on edge with its Night’s Tide mechanic—a dynamic shrinking of the explorable play area, culminating in an unavoidable boss battle. Preparation is key, as players must upgrade their characters and gear before nightfall to survive the inevitable showdown. This system makes every decision feel weighty, forcing players to adapt, strategize, and fight efficiently within a constantly evolving battlefield.

New Combat Mechanics and Movement Enhancements

While combat retains the brutal and rewarding mechanics of Elden Ring, Nightreign introduces several game-changing mobility options. Players can now wall-jump, traverse the air using Spectral Hawks, and sprint at speeds comparable to Torrent, the spectral steed. The removal of fall damage adds another layer of fluidity, allowing for daring leaps and high-speed movement across treacherous landscapes.

With these new mechanics, combat feels faster and more kinetic than ever before. We found ourselves dashing, jumping, and maneuvering through enemy attacks, making fights feel both exhilarating and strategic. This fresh movement system transforms the familiar Soulsborne combat formula, making it more versatile and immersive.

A Unique Revival System: Attacking to Save Teammates

One of the most interesting co-op features is the revival system, where players must attack fallen teammates to bring them back. A lock-on mechanic allows for long-range rescues, adding a layer of strategy when reviving allies mid-battle. However, if a player falls repeatedly, their revival meter extends, making subsequent rescues more difficult.

During the day, fallen players will respawn if not rescued in time, but at night, they remain incapacitated until an ally saves them. This mechanic increases the tension and stakes of nighttime battles, ensuring that every team decision carries significant consequences.

Boss Battles: Brutal Yet Rewarding

Nightreign does not hold back when it comes to difficulty. As expected from FromSoftware, bosses demand precision, patience, and teamwork. Throughout our playthrough, we suffered multiple defeats before finally emerging victorious against the Nightlord on our final session.

Each run lasts about 35-40 minutes, consisting of a three-day/night cycle. Our strategy evolved with each failure, requiring map exploration, gear upgrades, and deeper understanding of enemy attack patterns. The eventual triumph felt immensely satisfying, proving that trial and error remains a core element of FromSoftware’s signature challenge.

The Strength of Teamwork

While solo exploration is possible, our team quickly realized that success hinges on cooperation. We found that marking map locations, tackling major enemies together, and upgrading our flasks at churches significantly improved our survival rate. As players grew more accustomed to their characters, they began leveraging their unique abilities and Ultimates more effectively.

Nightreign is a game that thrives on synergy—whether rescuing a fallen ally or offering better-suited weapons to teammates, every action strengthens the squad. The sense of camaraderie and shared victory makes this one of the most immersive co-op experiences we’ve played in a FromSoftware title.

Final Thoughts: A Bold New Direction for Elden Ring

Elden Ring Nightreign is shaping up to be a thrilling co-op adventure that retains the essence of the original while pushing the series into exciting new territory. Its blend of fast-paced action, strategic teamwork, and intense boss battles makes it a must-play for fans of the franchise.

Prepare to embrace the night when Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30—a journey filled with danger, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of victory awaits!

However, that’s about to change. Apple is reportedly ditching the home button for good, replacing it with Face ID and a notched display similar to the iPhone 14. While some hoped for the newer Dynamic Island design, Apple appears to be keeping the SE slightly behind the curve, as it has in previous generations.
