WhatsApp is finally giving users what they’ve been asking for—more control over the app’s look and feel. The Meta-owned messaging giant is rolling out a significant update that promises to transform how users personalize their chats.
The biggest addition? A brand-new ‘Chat Theme’ feature that allows WhatsApp’s 3 billion users to customize their chat bubbles and backgrounds with a wide array of colors. Gone are the days of the default green and white interface—users can now choose from options like purple, blue, orange, and pink, adding a personal touch to their conversations.
In addition to chat bubble customization, WhatsApp is also introducing 30 new wallpaper options for users who want to further enhance their chat aesthetics. And for those who prefer a more personal touch, the option to upload a custom background from their camera roll remains available.
“You can apply the same theme to all your chats, or make each one extra special with different themes,” WhatsApp announced in a blog post. “Either way, your chat themes are only visible to you. You can also change the theme of your channels.”
This much-anticipated update has already begun rolling out and will be available to users worldwide in the coming weeks.
However, this update follows a recent privacy scare that caused concern among users. Earlier in February, a glitch in WhatsApp’s ‘View Once’ feature allowed certain iPhone users to access self-destructing images multiple times through the app’s settings. This flaw, which undermined the security of disappearing media, has since been fixed, but it served as a stark reminder of the importance of robust privacy protections.
Despite this misstep, WhatsApp’s latest customization options mark a new era for the app, offering users a greater level of personalization and control. As the update continues to roll out globally, users can look forward to a more vibrant and tailored messaging experience.
